The story began in 2011 at the University of Groningen, where research led by prof. Dr. Marc van der Maarel and Alle van Wijk revealed the unique properties of glycogen produced by extremophilic microalgae. As a big fan of professional cycling, Marc recognized the potential of this discovery beyond academic research for sports nutrition — sparking the first ideas of translating science into real-world impact.

During her studies, Mariska van der Hoek was introduced to this research and vision by Marc, and together they began shaping the first outlines of the business plan. Mariska quickly saw another opportunity: the unique characteristics of algal glycogen could offer real value in personal care. What started as scientific curiosity slowly grew into a powerful impact opportunity—a novel, sustainable ingredient with broad potential in personal care, nutrition, and beyond. 

As the idea matured, the founding team naturally came together. With his deep involvement in the original laboratory research, Alle van Wijk was an obvious co-founder. Cindy Semeijn completed the team, bringing years of experience in ingredient business and marketing. Together, they founded modAlgae in 2024. With a mix of 30+ years scientific expertise, 50+ years industrial experience, and a strong drive for sustainability and innovation, they are committed to creating meaningful, lasting impact with algal glycogen.
